Listen

Description

Dawn Waymire shared a tremendous amount of information to help you navigate the adoption process, if that is what you have decided for your family or if you seeking more information before making a decision.  She talked about why her and her husband chose the adoption route after losing their little girl and a failed IVF. She talked in depth about the mental difficulty she went through with infertility and IVF and decided that was not for them. She said it is still mentally hard going through adoption and just different.
Here are a few things she shared but I encourage you to listen to the entire episode because it is full of great information.
First, Do a lot of research on the adoption agencies because they can be very different. Also she would encourage you to find an agency that is reputable that helps the birth family also. She said its very important to talk with someone you know that has been though the adoption process. They will be a tremendous help with the process and will be aware of the pitfalls. Dawn said when you start talking about adoption people will come out of the woodwork to talk. People that I had no idea that their child was adopted shared information that was helpful. Let them guide you.  Dawn talked in detail about the home study and the paperwork. The financial information, background checks, letters of reference, and she said I was not prepared for the amount of questions there were, what kind of child we were willing to adopt and the health history questions were very overwhelming. Also she said make sure you set a budget.
Dawn said I will never take for granted that I get to be their mother and I can't believe they are mine. She said looking back I would have skipped all of that infertility struggles and went straight to adoption but I probably needed all that to get me to where I am.
Dawn's words of advice and encouragement for you:  It all may seem overwhelming at times when you're going through the steps but when you get through it you will look back and say that wasn't so bad. The emotional side will be tough and a lot of tough conversations but you have probably had tough conversations and decisions before. You can make it through them. It's important for you and your partner to be on the same page because if not it will be more difficult which is why finding that resource person to help work thorough it will help. It definitely helped my husband to talk to the social worker. There were a lot of unknowns and to have that person to guide you is so helpful. The end result is what you want.
