Elizabeth remembers having symptoms at a very early age that were dismissed by medical professionals. Her symptoms just continued to get worse as she got older, abdominal pain, heavy and painful periods, migraines, fatigue and chronic pain. She was diagnosed with infertility and later became pregnant on her own. While pregnant she continued to bleed which meant multiple hospital visits. She went into preterm labor and delivered her daughter who spent time in the NICU. Elizabeth's symptoms continued to get worse and she eventually was diagnosed with fibroids, severe endometriosis, and Uterus Didelphys.
A double uterus is a rare congenital abnormality. It is not known exactly what causes Uterus Didelphys but a genetic component may be a factor because this rare condition sometimes runs in families. This condition is also rarely talked about which makes it hard to find support and medical information about it. Elizabeth has become an international advocate for Women's Reproductive Health after her long health journey which included multiple surgeries and continuous complications.
Elizabeth's advice for anyone listening is to not keep quiet, if you see or feel things in your body to speak up and seek help. Let your family and doctors know so you can get an early diagnosis and get the right treatment so you are not suffering in silence. She said to remember that Gynaecological conditions don't just affect us physically, they also affect us psychologically, it can affect your career, life goals and your relationships. Her difficult journey in part was due to late diagnosis and she felt neglected by the medical profession. She would like all the listeners to use her story as a motivational tool to speak up so you receive the right medical care you need.
