Description

This episode will be divided into two sections. The first one will be directed at clients who request our services as translators and interpreters, so feel free to forward this episode to that one client of yours who may be having some trouble understanding what it is that you do.

After a commercial break, the second section of this episode will be directed at you, fellow language professional, who may still have some gaps in your professional experience or are stuck on where to go next in your career, so I hope some of the topics I’m about to address can be helpful to broaden your view of our field.

Here are the topics we're exploring:

FOR CLIENTS

  1. Translation and Interpretation are two different things
  2. Translators and interpreters don’t work with all languages
  3. Translators and interpreters are not walking dictionaries
  4. Translation and interpretation are not done automatically
  5. Translators and interpreters provide a highly specialized service that must be paid for accordingly, for language is not a commodity
  6. Being bilingual is not enough
  7. Subtitlers need access to the video file they’re subtitling

FOR PROFESSIONALS

  1. Translation and interpretation skills cannot be acquired overnight
  2. Your target language is just as important as your source language―if not more
  3. Just because you provide one service, it doesn’t mean you’ll be able to provide the other
  4. Specialization is key, but it’s not all black and white
  5. Diversification takes planning, skill acquisition, and knowledge in your segment of interest
  6. You don’t translate or interpret for personal satisfaction
