This year we see the United Nations reaching its 75th anniversary. The UN's leadership has chosen to mark this occasion by looking inward and looking back, rather than patting itself on the back. Where has the UN failed, how has it done well, in what ways can it improve? These are the questions that drive the UN's efforts in consultation, and, hopefully, action toward improvement. This year also marks the installment of Canada's newest Permanent Representative in New York, Honourable Bob Rae. So it is no coincidence that, as the UN considers how to renew itself, we have a new ambassador that has unparalleled experience in finding a balance between idealism and sustainable action. As Canada is a country that must frequently ask honest questions about what it is and where it is going, this may be a year of creativity and wonderful opportunities.
