Tyler Perry is a media mogul.
To become that he had to overcome failure, abuse, homelessness, and his own self doubt. From 1992 to 1998 he struggled to get his play “I Know I’ve Been Changed” off the ground.
His play was about surviving childhood abuse and forgiving the abuser. But Perry had yet to forgive his childhood abuser: his father.
It wasn’t until a few months before his break out performance in 1998 that he finally did what he urged his audiences to do. It was during a heated conversation that everything spilled out and at the end of it Perry said, “I forgive you.”
To this day he believes that when he forgave his father the Lord blessed the play. In his words:
Maybe I visited the right churches, maybe I finally got the word out. But until I die, I’ll believe that when I finally forgave my father, the Lord blessed the play.
