From God's eternal perspective of the people to their current state. Their current state was vastly different than Balaam's description from the eternal perspective. Also, the reason WHY they turned to sin versus the HOW they turned to idolatry from God. Idolatry is turning aside from the living God to idols, to love of the world, to satisfy fleshly desires.
