Summary Jer 40-42
Chp 40-41  After the destruction of Jerusalem and Judah, the captives were taken into Babylon and Jeremiah was among them. A commander took notice of him and was reminded the promise of the Lord, that he would save Jeremiah because of his faithfulness.  He was released and returned to Mizpah under the governorship of Gedaliah.
Gedaliah, who was appointed by the king of Babylon to govern the land, was later befriended and assassinated by Ishmael son of Nethaniah, along with members of his officials.
Ishmael takes the remnants of Mizpah into captivity including the king’s daughters.
Chp 42 Those that remained in the land approached Jeremiah and asked if he would go before the Lord to inquire what should they do and where should they settled.  They agreed that whatever the Lord decided, favorable or unfavorable, they would abide by his decision. .God reassured them to stay in the land that He would protect them and provide for them, but if they returned to Egypt, destruction would fall upon them once again.
