Abraham is asked by God to offer up Isaac, the son of promise, as a sacrifice. He responds in obedience, taking Isaac and trusting that God would provide the lamb in place of Isaac. When they get to the location, the altar is built and Isaac is tied and laid on the altar. But as Abraham is about to slay Isaac, an angel of the Lord calls from heaven and stops him. He is then shown a ram to offer in place of Isaac.
Following this, Rebekah who would later become Isaac’s wife, is brought into the narrative with the genealogy of Nahor, Abraham’s brother. This is followed by the death of Sarah at 127 years and her burial in the field of Machpelah, which Abraham had negotiated and purchased from Ephron.
Finally, our section today closes with the journey of Abraham’s servant to find a wife for Isaac from among Abraham’s family. The servant prays to the LORD God for favour in finding a wife and his prayer is answered in Rebekah. Rebekah agrees to marry Isaac and goes back with the servant where she and Isaac get married.
