Form and substance (function). Organization and performance. Control and freedom. Dichotomies, but compatible if reconciled. Success is dependent upon this reconciliation. Mancology proposes substance (function) over form (scale). An organization that promotes individual performance over power. A way to control freedom and recognize the need for control without the threat of power over justice.
Not many organizations attain the balance of form and function. Rarely, does it happen in business, and it is rarer in religion and government. The reason, pure and simple, is usually contingent upon the organization’s leader or its political power base. Usually form takes priority over substance, because that is what politics require But, substance can rise to the forefront if the pendulum swings away from the autocrat. “Down with tyranny, up with personal rights.” We have an ineffective (but substantive) do-gooder organization, with no realistic focus.
But upon occasion, a true leader comes on the scene: an Abe, or a Jesus, or a Martin or a Walt Disney. practicing Mancology without knowing that they are living for substance in their cause and formulating form in their leadership. The surge of the need to glorify the human being over economics makes good love stories, but bad business. But, in effect, good business is good for human beings. It takes a balance.
