This version of events teaches us that: John Rolfe was a ‘wealthy grower’; & that Pocahontas repudiated/rebuffed #JohnSmith in England - in front of several people who were witnesses- because she felt he’d sold her tribe out. In the Biography version of events in my previous podcast, #JohnSmith was a ‘fabulist’ who described his visit to her in London as it took her hours to recover the shock; he made it seem as if their decision not to see each other may have been romantic in nature - they weren’t- he was -according to historians in the Smithsonian version of events - known to try to exploit any connections to his now-famous friend. However, he had written Queen Anne about Pocahontas as a type of race review & glowing recommendation. Pocahontas was seen as the bridge between the two cultures, & served to promote more colonists settling in #Jamestown. What seems obvious from all these versions was that she was NOT poisoned; she bled : coughed up a lot of blood 🩸 shortly before dying, which is typical for #TB #Tuberculosis victims - not poison ☠️ TRISTA4CHANGE.COM This podcast is part of my series for #TIPD - #ThankIndigenousPeoplesDay - instead of #Thanksgiving. This show also presents a possible reason why so many people claim what’s called the ‘Pocahontas Exception’ - that if you are descendant of Pocahontas, you wouldn’t be designated as ‘colored’ in early oppressive American civil society in the South. According to this show, 30,000 people can truly claim ties to Pocahontas. She brought over 250 years of peace to the region- what’s called the #PocahontasPeace. Her image was used to popularize #Virginia #tobacco, & to draw more settlers to the #NewWorld’s colonies. She was HUGE at the time - her arrival in #Portsmouth, #England circa 1616 drew enormous crowds.
