Oprah Winfrey releases on Apple TV+ a taped segment dealing with the controversy surrounding her book club selection of “American Dirt” by Jeanine Cummins. The book has rendered a lot of attention — and money — from publishers and criticized by 142 authors who published a letter on Literary Hub urging Oprah to drop her selection of American Dirt. The letter said, “American Dirt has not been imagined well nor responsibly, nor has it been effectively researched. The book is widely and strongly believed to be exploitative, oversimplified, and ill-informed, too often erring on the side of trauma fetishization and sensationalization of migration and of Mexican life and culture.”
