Mark 10:23–31 (ESV) — 23 And Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How difficult it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!” 24 And the disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said to them again, “Children, how difficult it is to enter the kingdom of God! 25It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” 26And they were exceedingly astonished, and said to him, “Then who can be saved?” 27 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.” 28 Peter began to say to him, “See, we have left everything and followed you.” 29 Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, 30 who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life. 31 But many who are first will be last, and the last first.”APPLICATION
THERE WILL BE THOSE WHO WILL APPEAR AS TRUSTING IN CHRIST FOR THE GOSPEL, BUT PLACE THEIR HOPE IN WEALTH AND THE WORLD.
Mark 4:18–19 (ESV) — 18 And others are the ones sown among thorns. They are those who hear the word, 19 but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it proves unfruitful.
THERE WILL BE THOSE WHO WILL BE UNWILLING TO FORSAKE ALL TO FOLLOW CHRIST.
Mark 8:35–36 (ESV) — 35 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it. 36 For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?
WE ARE WARNED IN THE WORD OF THE DANGER AND DECEITFULNESS OF WEALTH
1 Timothy 6:9–10 (ESV) — 9 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.
Luke 12:20–21 (ESV) — 20 But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ 21 So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”
WE ARE GIVEN WISDOM THAT THE HOPE OF THE WEALTHY IS RIGHTEOUSNESS! NOT POVERTY.
Proverbs 11:28 (ESV) — 28 Whoever trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will flourish like a green leaf.
WE ARE COMMANDED ON HOW TO LIVE WITH WEALTH
1 Timothy 6:17–19 (ESV) — 17 As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. 18 They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, 19 thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.
