Description

The power or rule of the people as an ideal, hides an elephant and with it a dirty little secret. An election held by a prison is unlikely to generate a stable government. In this case, the prisoners and their guards, are not a people.

At the same token an immigrant population and a group of settlers from totally different cultural groups cannot be seriously considered a people. But nor can a group of progressives who want to enjoy the present and a group of conservatives who wish to focus on making investments for the future.

The childless and the parent cannot have the same interests or values. The people are not a uniform group. Which we all know but when the differences do not somehow cancel each other out in a shared national interest, democracy cannot be said to exist. There is a point at which democracy dies.
