Description

Welcome to Diabetic Loving, a podcast dedicated to showing that living with diabetes doesn't limit your ability to have a healthy and fulfilling life. I'm Safiyah Basir, the American Diabetes Ambassador and Executive Leader for the upcoming Tour De Cure on June 10th, 2023. Join our Diabetic Loving, Healthy Living Team by clicking the link below. We'd love to have you onboard!

As someone who has been living with type one diabetes since the age of 7, I understand the challenges and triumphs of managing this condition. My Hemoglobin A1C has consistently been in a remarkably healthy range over the years, ranging from 5.7 to 5.4. In fact, my most recent A1C reading was 5.4, taken two months ago. Through this podcast, I aim to inspire and empower everyone touched by diabetes, showing them that it's possible to lead a limitless life while staying healthy.

Tune in every week for a new episode. In today's episode, we have the incredible Gary Fobes joining us. Gary was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 19 and went on to play college basketball for the University of Massachusetts. He was even named the player of the year for the A-10 league in 2008. Gary's professional career included playing for the Denver Nuggets, Toronto Raptors, and Brooklyn Nets. He played for the Saigon Heat four years ago and is currently retired. In our conversation, Gary will share his journey as a healthy and active diabetic basketball player. We'll also be answering questions from our listeners.

Speaking of which, we have some questions from Valentino, a 12-year-old type one diabetic. Valentino is curious about how diabetes will affect his life in college, particularly while living in a dorm on campus. He dreams of playing professional basketball but worries about managing his blood sugar during games. He also wonders if he'll be able to live independently as an adult and pursue his dreams, including a stint in New York after college.
