Tracy joins me to talk about the ins and outs of being a photographer and how she stumbled into this career. Tracy took classes in High School and loved it. She then had the opportunity to study abroad in Italy and was excited to include a photography class. Years later, she was gifted an amazing Cannon camera, which opened her eyes to shooting on digital. She brushed up her skills through a few classes. Now married, expecting their first baby, and knowing they’d be returning stateside, Tracy began doing shoots for friends in London. Then with the arrival of their daughter, she spent time practicing photography as much as she could and shot photos for her friends’ children to gain experience. In 2013, Tracy Lynn Photography officially launched, specializing in family and lifestyle newborn photography. Congratulations on a decade in the business! We talk about why she focused her efforts on family and newborns, what she loves about photography, and what is her least favorite thing (…filing taxes anyone?). We then discuss different styles of photography out there, in particular her craft of doing fine art portraits for schools rather than the traditional school portrait. We touch on the nuance of setting prices and navigating boundaries around her personal and professional life. Then we dive into the behind-the-scene efforts that go into each photo shoot. I ask Tracy for advice on how to go about selecting a photographer. 1. Checkout their gallery and make sure it fits your style. 2. Ensure your personalities jive. We discuss the art of wedding photography, and the hustle, and glam, and physical endurance that goes into that style. I share my business aspirations that if I ever launched into photography, my niche would be selecting the top 3 photos. Tracy gives me some solid advice on my blind spots for this master plan, and I’ll take that as a sign to stick to podcasting. Lastly we wrap up by exploring the beauty that sets apart a professional photo shoot beyond just pulling out our iPhone.
