Welcome Back to Nuanced Beauty!

In today's episode I ask the question: What's your posture? By posture, I'm not necessarily referring to the tangible body positioning of a person like slouched shoulders and gaze down, or an upright posture with direct eye contact, but moreso the energy or demeanor you bring into a relationship. Do you walk into that friendship seeking advice and counsel, or do you walk in expecting to lead and guide the conversations? And can you shift your posture in a relationship?

Bill illustrates a friendship where he felt like he intentionally shifted his posture from the one mostly leading for a season when it felt needed given the situation, to the one being vulnerable and sharing where he was struggling and needing advice or just a place to vent. And I share a story of a rocky friendship where I can see that we may have both failed in this dance, and we both clung to a confident and competent posture at the expense of connection. I hope you appreciate the Marine Engineering lesson on "droop" and how nicely it illustrates this battle of power dynamics.

From there we dive into age, and a rut we might get in where we think our age alone defines our posture of leader or follower. When yes, there's wisdom and experience through our age, but it's not only defining characteristic of a relationship, and being to rigid on this may erode the relationship eventually.

Lastly, we dive into the parent-child relationship that we recently read about in today's book receommendation. In particular, a parent can benefit by shifting their stance or posture toward their child as they grow. From the disciplinary start, to elementary-aged teaching, to pre-teen and high school coaching, and finally the adult-aged friendship. Raise your kid with the intent that one day they'll be a cool adult, and you'll want to be their friend. Because your child will be an adult for many years longer than they were a child under your roof.
