Welcome Back to Nuanced Beauty!

What do you think of Work-Life Balance? A friend recently shared a work event she attended and they discussed the concept of work life balance and asserted that it may be better to consider how work and life are integrated. This either/or sort of mentality can be compartmentalizing things, and that rigid separation of work and life may not be so great. That said, people in coaching/ministry/health have the lines blurred. Later on we also discuss Bill's 24/7 job which blurs these lines as well.

I, Christina, wonder if the root of the idea came out of guilt. Because in the midst of working hard to have it all, people felt bad as if something were missing, so the idea of work-life balance, would allow someone to shift their outlook and not feel so bad for overly committing to one area, or possibly give them a reason to change that. Bill brings up how HR and Companies have used the work-life balance to be the reason why people want to work for them.

We talk about the influence of unions to create the 8hr work day, 8hr leisure, 8hr sleep. We talk about how the fem movements have impacted the desire/ and/or pressure to work and be really successful at work and home. We also discuss the potential equal and opposite pull for the genders here, where the women are being called to do it all in work and life, AND the men are being called to do it all as well, but with the emphasis being to get more involved in the home/family side of things.

We also share where we may flip the gender norms with the work desires. I, Christina, was highly driven to be successful in a career in my early twenties, and I talked about work EVERY night for entirely too much time. But then Bill would love to do as little as possible at work, bake bread, garden, and homeschool the kids. Tell us what you think about the concept of work-life balance. And do you feel a desire or pull toward one area over the other?
