Welcome Back to Nuanced Beauty!
This episode is all about how much we want to be in the know versus how much we can handle knowing in the dawn of the 24 hour news cycle. We also consider local news versus national news and the good intent of being an informed citizen. But then we also consider the sensational language and buzzwords to elicit fear/anger/concern so you will click on their article and read it. Furthermore, we can't ignore the large political slant among all the major news outlets. There's an interesting shift of people choosing to get their news outside of the mainstream news outlets.
We share some stories about the days when we were away at sea and what news was like aboard our ships, circa 08/09 into the early 2010s...
Also, how much attention to the news is enough (an hour a day, 2, 3, 5)?
Lastly, we give you guys several recommendations for alternative news outlets and interviews that we think are doing some solid work.
-The Free Press: Bari Weiss launched a substack subscription called Common Sense with Bari Weiss, which has now expanded into The Free Press. We have paid a $5/mo subscription for the past year or two to read her content and are excited that she's expanded! She received enough followers that she's launched their news outlet and hired on more employees.
-Matt Taibbi's substack
-Liberal Patriot substack
-Breaking Points with Krystal and Sagar: I'll say, had I found them via youtube channel first, I would never have tuned in! Their graphics and titles are very click bate-y, BUT I found them via podcast format first! And have been tuning in M-W-F
-Morning Wire: My two cents is you can look anywhere to get a liberal leaning slant, so if you do happen to lean left, this would be a good opportunity for you to get just a 15 minute dose of what the right is concerned about. They do a nice job of not being too verbose or emotional (think NPR pre-Trump presidency), but if you listen to it for quite some time, you will notice a common thread of the top concerns for conservatives (economy spending and jobs, crime in cities, and education struggles).
