Born and raised on O’ahu, Hawai’i, specifically in Ewa Beach in a very Filipino-populated area. Both of my parents as well as my older sister were born in the Philippines while my older brother and I were born in Hawai’i. I'm currently a sophomore student at UH Manoa majoring in Asian Studies and I also went to UH Hilo for a short while majoring in Linguistics. I pretty much enjoy learning about Asian cultures, especially languages to kind of make up for not being able to learn Tagalog from my parents at a young age.
Dessa's advice to the future generation would have to be proud of your culture and who you are, whether you’re full Filipino or part Filipino, you’re still Filipino. Don’t fall for the stereotypes that we’re always represented as in the media because it’s much more deeper than being a nurse and always eating adobo, be comfortable with yourself and whatever you want to be, but don’t forget where you come from.
