There are many verses in the Quran that refer specifically to the way a woman should dress or walk in public. The clearest verse on the requirement of modest dress is Surah 24:31, telling women to guard their private parts and draw their khimār over their bosoms. The most visible form of modesty is to wear the hijab – the head covering that many Muslim women wear. Hijab, however, goes beyond the headscarf.
