Fifth Sunday of Lent
(March 29th, 2020)
John 11: 1-45
Homily from Redemptor Mundi Church by Father Joseto Bernadas Jr., OP
In the gospel reading today there are a lot of things we can learn from our Lord Jesus Christ, first He is trully Human, He has emotions, when someone displayed luminous faith He was happy, at an impending death and He could anticipate it, He was afraid, but it's ok because courage is not the absence of fear but the resolution to do God's will in the midst of fear, when people abused the temple for selling, He was angry. Emotions can be good when it's appropriate & proportionate, when there is a need of anger we should be angry, for example when there is injustice we should be angry. There is death of a friend in today's gospel, that's why Jesus was sad and He wept because He has emotions because He is truly human, but He is also truly divine because He resurrected Lazarus. There is a kind of life that Jesus could give us and this is called Eternal life, our Lord Jesus Christ can unite us back to the Father through death, despite the fear, danger and sacrifice. We are called to be truly human but also do divine things, through sacrifice. There are a lot of people that is serving others despite the danger and fear in the midst of this pandemic, because of their voluntary service many people lived. Beyond giving physical life, we also need to give spiritual life. The best of man can come out in the worst of times.
