On this episode of Not Rocket Science, I kick off the episode by (of course) ranting wayyyyy off topic ranting and raving about how I may be the only person on earth who decided to watch the first five seasons of Game of Thrones only to quit the show and how the current phenomena of GOT makes me feel like Iβm crazy or something (the show is a solid B, letβs be real here). After that, I dive into something that has been on my mind for the past week which is how the cult of #hustleporn has distorted the reality of the classic talent vs. hard work debate (for those who donβt know, hustleporn is basically what Gary Vaynerchuk copycats post on Instagram about having to hustle and grind until you die and what not). I use sports and video games as analogies to explain the nuance of the talent vs. hard work debate and how it gets lost in this world of bite-sized attention grabbing sensationalism that thrives on social media platforms. I then add another wrinkle to the fold by trying to figure out where the whole laptop lifestyle dream that marketers sell fits into the talent vs. hardworking paradigm and in doing so make my own head almost explode due to the level of ridiculousness that has saturated the current world of #entrepreneurship and #digitalmarketing (and yea those hashtags are a cheap way to talk about each subject in the context of social media, ehhh I tried). All of that and a fun fact on how Sony missed out on billions of dollars back in 98 by turning down The Avengers franchise in this latest episode!
