BLOCKING in self-defense is the world of NOT letting things into your space that are harmful. In Life Defense BLOCKING serves the same purpose. Let’s see how…

The kickboxer was in his last round. Pummeled all night long by punishing fists meant to knock him out. The last round was starting to get to him, yet remarkably he was not winded, and still strong on his feet. His younger opponent was starting to tire however from the massive amount of energy expended in delivering powerful knock out punches over and over again to the older fighter’s massive forearms.

That’s right! The older more experienced fighter had been waiting, leaning into the ropes to absorb the devastating strikes of his younger opponent. BLOCKING with his powerful forearms, he covered and redirected each strike with slight moves of his torso so as to not to allow any blow to land with much force. The payoff was here, with a slip of the last punch the older fighter came to life and spun out of the corner ducking under the powerful haymaker his tired opponent threw wildly in the air.

With superior timing, and preserved energy, he landed a punch to the lower abdomen of the younger fighter, doubling him over to set up the second fist slamming down with all his full force, weight and power to the young man’s jaw dropping him to the canvas. 1-2-3…the count started, the older fighter backed up into a neutral corner…, 4-5-6… the crowd came alive realizing the fight might be over, 7-8-9… and by 10 bells rang, and the crowd was cheering wildly. You’re out…and victory was his!

Basically, the older, more experienced fighter had BLOKED his way to victory. In self-defense, or in the ring, BLOCKING out unwanted knockout blows to the head is always a great idea!

In life how often are we attacked by unwanted blows to the head from schedules, work, commitments, family demands and traffic jams, and how do we keep on our feet, and not go down with the count? BLOCK!

In Life Defense we would say simply BLOCK. A BLOCK allows us time to process, recover, and most of all not take blows to the head. A BLOCK may look like turning off the noise for 1 hour a day and getting out of the office, or house to take a walk. It might look like stepping quickly out of a meeting, or shuttering the ZOOM session before the complaint session gains steam. Or maybe is just going home at your appointed time and hanging with the family at the park for an impromptu game of “chase my dog that stole my frisbee!”

Any way you look at it BLOCKING gives us time, and space and preserves our brains to be used for something better than a punching bag. So practice BLOCKING! Great fighters do…They practice anything that preserves them for another round.

In Life Defense this might be BLOCKING your calendar once a week. This BLOCKING should include down time, play time and “me-time!” BLOCKING is effective when it BLOCKS anything that potentially could take you out!

So BLOCK and practice BLOCKING. Remember it’s never too late to BLOCK…BLOCK!
