Description

As Frank, the older classmate, reached to grab Johnny, the much smaller Johnny felt Frank’s large hands just barely beginning to attach to his blue hoodie, intent on driving him backwards into the lockers as he had done so many times before. All at once Johnny had a calm fall over him, and heard a voice in his head… COORDINATE, COORDINATE, just COORDINATE!

Everything seemed in slow motion, just as his instructor had told him it would. Johnny had been training all summer for something just like this and all the painful, sweaty, repetitions of his HAPKIDO classes were about to pay off. Something about practicing and creating myelin on his neural pathways over the last few months… whatever it was by the time Frank started to push Johnny was already in motion.

Stepping backwards and bringing his fists between Frank’s larger arms was easy as Frank had provided all the energy Johnny would ever need. Just as Frank’s momentum pushed past Johnny’s fists were slamming into the pivotal points of his wrists and Frank’s hands released as he slammed headlong into to the lockers.

Bam! The resounding, and somewhat satisfying sound of his head and shoulder into the metal locker was almost as loud as Johnny’s kihap (energy yell) which got the attention of the nearby security officer.

Surprised, Johnny actually heard himself say, “Geez, this COORDINATED power sh..stuff actually works!” Red faced, Frank turned just in time to hear the hallway fill with laughter and feel the powerful grip of the security officer on his arm. As Frank was guided to the office his colorful threats echoed quieter and quieter, sealing his fate.

COORDINATED power is how much smaller, weaker defenders “use the energy” of much larger opponents. The PRINCIPLE is simple. COORDINATION is more powerful than fighting. Period.

Think about it, Johnny could have resisted, and Frank would still drive him into the lockers. Frank’s 65 pound advantage means Johnny would have to be not only 65 lbs heavier, he would have to be faster, and stronger to even start to compete with that much force.

In life how often do we resist, fight and not consider the unused power of everything and everyone around us? Johnny used Frank’s energy as a gift, to preserve his own health.

Mostly we consider first what we can do before we ever get started with anything. A much later though is bringing in help, usually when we have failed, or begun to fail in our performance. More often than not our COORDINATION of power is too late.

When do we COORDINATE power? Consider it’s now, right away, or before we even start. Why not? COORDINATION of power is always more powerful than anything we can do alone. COORDINATE!
