Tommy stood facing Bobby on the sidelines of the football field. Some comment was made that got everything started and a small crowd formed around them. Tommy was a full head shorter than Bobby, and Bobby was stepping toward him quickly.

Tommy knew instinctively from his Hapkido training that he couldn’t withstand the frontal attack that seemed imminent, and stepped one foot back in a defensive stance, hands up saying, “Hey Bobby, slow down I don’t want any trouble.” Bobby seemed to ignore his words, and several beers that Tommy smelled on Bobby’s breath told him he might not be hearing them anyway.

All at once Bobby’s hands went really wide in a huge gesture, “Common you F%^$ing punk!” And with that lounged to push Tommy violently. Tommy stepped quickly in a semi-circle back again and SYNCHRONIZED with Bobby’s push, allowing all his energy to stumble easily past. No matter how much Bobby pushed, or wildly swung Tommy just SYNCHRONIZED with his motion like an experienced matador, allowing a 3000 lb. bull to brush harmlessly past him time and time again.

After what seemed like an eternity, and was maybe only 40 seconds, the conflict was over. Bobby had finally tripped, and fallen to the ground cursing and spitting out the dust he’d swallowed, and refusing assistance from his friends to gain his feet, and continue.

In the world of self-defense, SYNCHRONIZING with a larger, more powerful opponent is a principle that works. Just as the matador can SYNCHRONIZE with the bull, SYNCHRONIZING with your opponent is a PRINCIPLE that defenders wisely incorporate against larger, more powerful opponents.

In Life Defense, and in life, standing toe to toe with a larger more powerful force is ineffective. When faced with a more powerful force SYNCHRONIZE with the project, co-worker, or opposition and live just long enough to succeed. At some point either the force will tire of being oppositional, or your SYNCHRONIZATION will turn into a desired outcome. SYNCHRONIZE…
