On this episode of the Yumlish podcast, we are talking to Dr. Tony Spann. We will speak to him about his personal journey to instilling the importance of mental health, his work at Henry Health, the correlation between mental health and diabetes, and the impact of COVID-19 on mental health and especially those with chronic conditions like diabetes. 

Dr. Spann is the Chief Clinical Officer for Henry Health. Dr. Spann is an Assistant Professor in the School of Rossier’s Masters of School Counseling Program. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of South Carolina, a Master of Science in Clinical Counseling from Johns Hopkins University, and a Ph.D. in School Psychology from Howard University. Dr. Spann is also the CEO of his own private practice, U in Mind. He is a Nationally Certified School Psychologist and a Licensed Professional Counselor in Maryland, DC, and Virginia.

"But when we think about some of the bigger overarching issues, it's really stress; stress of being an African American, stress of being the Latin American, stress of just being in a society where you're not really accepted. There's still a lot of prejudice and issues that you live through, as well as working through on a job or career. So there's a lot of preexisting issues that cause the issues of mental health, and well as changes of diet and eating."
