Description

In a rare astronomical event, a giant hole has appeared on the surface of the sun and it could potentially send 1.8 million mph solar winds towards Earth. The discovery of a coronal hole on the sun, 30 times the size of Earth, is causing scientists to predict the occurrence of fast wind at Earth by Friday night or Saturday morning. Coronal holes are known to release solar winds into space, which can reveal stunning auroras and damage satellites. However, scientists do not expect this hole to cause any infrastructure damage, but it may help trigger auroras in some parts of the world. With the sun gearing up for a peak in activity, which happens every 11 years, it is more likely that these holes will appear near the equator of the sun, as this one has. This unique event makes it interesting to see the fast wind expected to come to Earth, and experts are working hard to understand space weather with the help of theoretical physics, plasma simulations, and cutting-edge observations.
