Description

In this episode, I discussed the issue of underaged child labor in Africa with a specific focus on domestic workers or house helps as they are commonly called. Like many developing countries in the so-called global South, there are a number of issues that plague countries in this region, and in societies that are traditionally patriarchal, women and children seem to suffer the most. The system of “house helps”, or domestic workers is deeply embedded in Nigerian culture, and many other African cultures, particularly amongst well-to-do families who can afford to hire them. For some house helps, (which are most often young girls in their adolescent up to teenage years), being in this position may mean a better chance at life when they serve good families who can help fund their education, but for countless others, they face physical violence, sexual abuse, and mental abuse at the hands of the families that they serve. 15 million children under the age of 14 are working across Nigeria. This issue desperately needs to be addressed by the Nigerian government and other African governments with the issue of child labor.
