What is Ash Wednesday?

The season of Lent is 40 days long, which reflects the 40 days that Jesus spent in the wilderness. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. Sundays do not count towards the 40 days because they are already the Lord’s Day. The last day of lent is the Saturday before Easter Sunday.

We typically associate Ash Wednesday with Catholicism but all believers in Jesus can participate. Many will post pictures of an ash cross on their foreheads or profile pictures but what is it all about?

For many the next 40 days are about following Jesus and a time of deeper devotion. This is practiced through prayer, fasting, and reflection on the person and work of Jesus on our behalf leading to Easter.

What can I do during lent if I’m not catholic?

1. Pray without ceasing. (1 Thess. 5:16-18)

2. Start a forty daily Bible reading plan.

3. Fasting. (Matt. 6:16-18)

4. Reflect on What Jesus has done leading up to Easter.

Love God. Love People. Make Disciples.
