Description

Shane is a Master of Forestry Student at Michigan Technological University in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and my classmate. Although he was once a city slicker, he now has years of experience in a variety of natural resource-related fields like humane wildlife removal and prevention, photographing at the Philmont base camp with Boy Scouts, photography of landscapes and fire scars, and fire rehabilitation. Shane's passion stemmed from his parents' appreciation of nature and being a Boy Scout where he attended Philmont himself as a 14-year-old, determined to go back because of the life-changing experiences he gained while there. After a few years as a Senior Inspector in wildlife removal and prevention in Chicago, he made it back to Philmont as a photographer for several years. When the Ute Park Fire hit the base camp in 2018, Shane stayed to do fire rehabilitation, working to prevent floods and recover the beloved area with his handy-dandy chainsaw. Shane's love for the UP which he visited as a child, drew him to MTU to get his Master of Forestry. He is currently one of my best friends and will graduate this year to eventually find a career doing what he is most passionate about. Get Caught in the Krausefire and listen to Shane and I talk about his experiences, scouting, and forestry while we are quarantined thousands of miles apart during the Corona outbreak.
