Description

Get caught in the Krausefire with Krause and Tara as they talk about Maple Syrup in Michigan!

Tara Bal is an assistant research professor in the College of Forest Resources and Environmental Science at Michigan Technological University. She teaches forest health (like fungi and insects in the forest), wild foods, and plant-related courses, as well as Maple Syrup Management and Culture!

In this episode Tara tells us about the maple syrup course. She explains the culture that began so many years ago with indigenous people who made their own containers to transport the syrup, tapped into the trees, and boiled the sap into the rich and sweet substances we enjoy today! We discuss some of the processes that are used to turn many gallons of sap into a gallon of syrup from tapping to evaporation to telling stories while families and friends work together to make a product the world loves.
