Description

Unlock the placebo (and nocebo) effect: Paul shows how expectation, language and ritual shape performance, wellbeing and recovery—and how to harness these forces ethically.

In this episode, Paul Corke demystifies the placebo effect—and its opposite, the nocebo effect—to show how your expectations, stories and environment can measurably influence focus, confidence, pain, stress and results. This isn’t about tricking yourself; it’s about using evidence-based mechanisms (expectation, conditioning and context) to prime your brain and body for better outcomes—ethically and transparently.

You’ll learn how framing, self-talk and small pre-performance rituals activate helpful neurochemical pathways (think reward, motivation and natural pain relief), and how to avoid language and habits that accidentally create nocebo effects. Paul links these ideas back to the Mindset Equation so you can turn insight into daily practice.

You’ll hear:

Try this (7-day protocol):

  1. Expectation primer (AM): Write one 2-sentence statement: “Today I expect [specific outcome] because [credible reason]. I’ll know it’s working when I notice [cue].”

  2. Tiny ritual (pre-task): Same sequence each time (breath x4 → posture reset → one cue word).

  3. Because-plans: “If it’s [trigger], then I’ll [action] because it moves me toward [goal].”

  4. Evidence journal (PM): Note one win and one cue you noticed—train your brain to look for proof.

  5. Nocebo audit: Replace catastrophic/absolute language (“always/never,” “disaster”) with neutral-to-positive wording.
