What symbol could be more famous for the United States of America than the Statue of Liberty. At its very top is the famous poem which reads in part “…..Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to be free,…..” It is famous because that is the essence of the U. S. , a Country that has welcomed people from all over the world who are in distress, often running for their lives, determined to make a better future for their families. This podcast episode introduces Angelica Salas, Executive Director of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA). She has headed the organization since 1999, which incudes offices in Los Angeles, and up and down the State of California. In the process, Ms. Salas has become a national leader in developing programs and advocacy for the millions of immigrants currently living in the United States. She takes us down the road of the fraught and unpredictable relationship of immigrants and refugees to the U. S. and to countries around the world. Listen to what makes up the Coalition and how their work raises the bar in making a more just society for us all.
