In this episode I have the honor of sitting down and chatting with my dear friend Chelsea Gonzales and her 3-month-old daughter Lelaini even makes an entrance. Little did I know the 2021 Fall season of coaching at South Mountain Community College here in AZ under Head Coach Brittney Mata and Co-Head Coach Brandon Telesco, it would connect me with someone such as Chelsea. She is probably one of the most genuine people I know. From playing four years at ASU to playing on the National Team for Mexico and competing in the Olympics, she by far has and is checking all the boxes as far as playing every level of Fastpitch Softball from when she was young to now, just signed her second contract with professional fastpitch team, The SIS VIPERS FP. (Smash It Sports Vipers FP)
I knew Chelsea was going to be a good Momma by sitting back and watching her simply taking a moment to speak into the SMCC Athletes with love and GRIT. Speaking firm but also in a loving manor. Watching my daughter admire her for not only her softball skills and knowledge but admiring her for her as a person and yes, I can't leave out for her infamous "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom" Tatoo on one of her thighs (not only one of Chelsea's favorite singers Salena but also a favorite singer of my daughters) I just had feeling BIG things were coming her way and a new chapter was going to start.
What I didn't anticipate is how soon motherhood would come for her, then and still professional fastpitch athlete. Chelsea and her boyfriend would find out they were pregnant with their daughter with 20 weeks left in her first-year contract with the SIS VIPERS FP. What an awesome story!
Chelsea not only shares the one moment in her younger years when she wanted to quit and how she turned out of it, but she also speaks about her family's roots, how they helped build her to where she is today and also the amazing support from her team and the organization SIS Vipers.
She also shares her best advice on how to keep showing up on the field and keep loving this sport!
It is with great hope that one young lady hears this episode and is inspired that yes even she can set a goal and reach it as a professional athlete and be a mom too!
I look forward to supporting Chelsea in her up and coming season with the SIS Vipers and can't wait to see little Lelaini in the mix, as after all in a way she was on board and playing professional women's fastpitch softball right along with her momma!
AGAIN, What a story! I can't wait for Cheslea's ESPN story...just throwing that out there but to me as a former colligate fastpitch player whose dreams were cut short of playing at the professional level due to a blood clotting disorder, Chelsea made history and is continuing to do so by paving the way for the FEMALE Athletes...one pitch at a time! #opaat
