:60 Trillion Dollar Buying Power
In 2016 African-American’s recorded over $1.2 trillion dollars in annual spending. Wow. This is more than the GDP of over 20 individual nations. Yes you heard that right. Blacks spend enough money to emphatically start our own country. I mean, people already think Wakanda from the Blockbuster Hit Movie The Black Panther is a real place. Well guess what, we spend enough money to make fiction turn into facts. Well here are the facts, or at least based on my opinion. Many of us are probably not looking to start our own country and go back to Africa as Marcus Garvey suggested in his book Message To The People. But we can all do some practical things that will help build generational wealth with our dollars right here in America.
:90 The Business of Royalty and Residuals
I as a published author makes a royalty every time one of my books are sold, and or read on amazon.com, apple book store, kobo, barnes and noble and many more. Basically each retailer has to pay me a percentage off each sale that is made. Even on a book I may have written ten or fifteen years ago like my book “Speak Up! Poetry” which was released in 2004. No matter how small the royalty checks from ebooks, printed books and audiobooks are now, I know that overtime these checks can grow large and large the more I write and publish. Most importantly when I die, my daughter and her children will receive these same payments from these retailers and more because I own all of the copyrights to my work. And as long as these products sale, my family gets paid, and the best part is, my daughter only has to lift a finger to sign a check. Now--- this is an example of royalty payments, the same rule applies for musicians, writers etc.
One of the next best part of building long term wealth is through residual payments. An actor does five seasons of a show or even one season doesn’t matter, all is based on their contractual obligations. But said actor, does a show or movie they get paid a residual everytime that movie is played. Now many of us probably won't cross that Hollywood red-line so many of us may choose other routes for residual income. Some may choose an MLM others may start their own business and pass it down. But however you desire to build wealth, there is no profession that has built more millionaires than real-estate. And I’m not just talking about going to a class getting your license as a realtor. No I’m talking about being an investor. Someone who may wholesale properties without having cash or credit or someone who fix and flips or buys and holds properties. There is a lot I can speak about in this area of building Black Power and a lot I am learning. But since I am pressed for time maybe I’ll do a part two.
