If you were like me this weekend, rushing through the sea of black people just so you can see Jordan Peele’s newest movie Us. Now I know what you are thinking, didn’t he just talk about this movie in the last episode. Correct. But I didn’t get to speak about the box-office numbers that were just released on Sunday to the tune of a stellar $70 million dollars over three days. This movie was indeed a great production by Jordan Peele and the entire cast. I give the movie an A rating.
:90 Black Films Win
Every year Hollywood executives and pundits all ask themselves. Can a film with a majority black cast be a winner at the box-office. Well--- time and time again black actors, directors and producers have proved them wrong. In a big way… And black audiences have always attended and supported great content. Not just because of a black cast, because believe me we have seen some black movies that haven’t done that well. They have supported films that have great content like ‘Black Panther’ and movies that make you think like ‘Get Out”. Black people are not a monolith. We don’t just watch gansta and ‘hood’ movies. While ‘Straight Out of Compton’ was an example of a great theatrical production and a very well told storyline that saw great box-office success for Universal Studios. The same studio that has produced Get-Out and Us. Universal as a distributor has also released a few Kevin Hart features. Clearly they understand the benefits of being in the business of black movies. Universal Studios is wholly owned by Comcast.
