The word hypocrite comes from the Greek word for "actor." Why do we feel the need to perform for others and act like we are better than we are? Sinclair Ferguson sums it up well in this look at Matthew 6:1-8; 16-18: "Throughout this section of the sermon, our Lord hints that the real trouble with the heart of the hypocrite is that he does not know God as his heavenly Father! He is insecure before God and, therefore, seeks security in what his fellow men think about him. He is unreal in his activities before men because he has no real relationship with God."
