Description

Thank you for sending your questions about the story! In the last chapter, Opal went to the library and met the librarian, Miss Franny Block. The librarian told Opal a story about Florida a long time ago. The librarian said Florida was wild. That meant when the librarian was a little girl, the town of Naomi wasn’t very big, and it was more like wilderness, which means there weren’t as many people living there, and there were wild animals, like the bear.

In this next chapter, Opal will go to the pet store to get a leash and collar for Winn-Dixie. She will meet a new character, named Otis. Pay attention to the new setting of the pet store, and Otis, because they will be important in the story later.  Remember, as you listen, to imagine what’s happening - make a movie in your mind. You can always stop the recording, and go back to listen again if you need to. I hope you enjoy this next chapter of, “Because of Winn-Dixie!”

Did you enjoy that chapter?  In this last chapter, what does Opal want? What problem does she have getting what she wants? What does she do to solve her problem?   In this book, we’ll read about different problems that Opal has. Pay attention to the big problems, and write them in your Reading Notebook or on a piece of paper. You can make 2-column notes. On one side, write Opal’s problem, and on the other side, write what she does to try to solve the problem. Please send your thoughts about this chapter to your teacher, and we’ll see you again for the next chapter of “Because of Winn-Dixie!”
