Welcome back, Azusa Pacific, Biola and Stanford scholars! This is part 2 of our “Because of Winn-Dixie” read-aloud. In the last episode, we met our main character, Opal. She went to the store to get some groceries, and when she got to the market, a dog was running around in the store! Opal gave the dog a name, “Winn-Dixie,” and she rescued him from going to the pound. But, now Opal has a problem. She already loves Winn-Dixie, but she’s going to need to convince her father to let her keep the dog. Do you think she’ll be able to persuade him to let her keep him?
Listen to the next part, of “Because of Winn-Dixie” to find out!.
I hope you enjoyed chapter 2. We met Opal’s father, she calls him “the preacher.” She said her father was like a “turtle hiding inside its shell, in there thinking about things and not ever sticking his head out into the world.” What does that mean? Is Opal’s father a turtle? No, of course not. She just means that her father is quiet, and he works hard, and doesn’t talk a lot. Do you know anyone like that? What are some encouraging words that you might say to someone who is like a turtle, hiding inside its shell. Send a message to your teacher to let her know your thoughts about Opal’s dad, or something you were thinking as you listened to the story. We hope to hear from you soon, and make sure to tune in next time for part 3 of “Because of Winn-Dixie!”
