Description

Today is Tuesday, November 5, 2019 and here is your Daily Devo.

Can you imagine children trying to obey a parent they donโ€™t love? Itโ€™s hard enough for children to obey a parent they do love! Children can be told repeatedly certain directions, but until a deep love abides in their hearts, rote rules do nothing for a real relationship. When Jesus talked about the relationship between love and keeping the commandments in John 14:15, He did not equate love with commandment-keeping. He knew trying to keep the old laws wouldnโ€™t bear lasting fruit, so He made commandment-keeping the effect of loving and cherishing Him.

This new covenant isnโ€™t written on tablets or paper, but in our hearts. Paul commented on this reality in 2 Corinthians 5:17 when he talked about being a new creation in Christ. When we believe the message of the gospel, the old person we once were dies, and we are spiritually resurrected with Christ. Our new self, with a new heart, has new desires, new tastes, and most importantly, a new Master. No longer are we imprisoned by sin; instead, God indwells our hearts through the presence of the Holy Spirit.

Think about this: Why is it important that we emphasize obedience to God out of our love for Him? How would you respond biblically to the often-heard notion in our culture that people donโ€™t really change?
