According to God, the righteous will live by faith. God exhorted His prophet to trust Him during these darkest of days and he would live, just as those who believe the gospel receive eternal life in Christ. In fact, this is exactly what Paul echoed in the New Testament when he reminded Christians in Rome of Christ’s saving power (Rom. 1:16-17).
Living by faith requires patience, and patience is never naturally easy. God knows it and that’s why He repeatedly reminds us to remember His works and promises throughout the Bible. In other words, God doesn’t call us to a blind faith, or a kind of wishful-thinking without any evidence to believe in Him or His word. On the contrary, faith is filled with solid reasons and evidences for why we should trust and believe in God, no matter our circumstances. When God reminded the Israelites of how He rescued their ancestors from Egypt by parting the Red Sea, He reminded His people to recall His faithfulness in the keeping of the covenants. Because of God’s past actions, the people could experience confident and informed faith no matter their present circumstances.
Think about this: What is the connection between faith and evidence? Are they mutually opposed? Why or why not? What are some reasons and evidences that support faith in Jesus?
