Players around the #nfl are back at their teams facilities as organized team activities (#ota) have now progressed into the second phase of the offseason. With officially less than 100 days before the regular season kicks off.. news has been coming out across the league regarding players who ARE participating and players that are NOT participating in OTAs. To be clear, as a part of the last CBA, OTA phase 1 and phase 2 are "voluntary:"
Like every year, most players who do not show up are in active contract negotiations looking for a payday via contract extensions. That is a majority of player who don't show up with the only expection being select veteran players, oftentimes who are (paid) superstars (i.e. Trent Williams).
With little leverage players have in the NFL, no showin to OTAs is a standard route to take in order to apply "pressure" the the teams in getting a deal done. Of course teams & coaches want all their players to be in the building working out with the team. Specifically so they can start to integrate with the rookie class and get a head start on the basic philosophies & standards they have.
To no ones suprise, #49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk is not at OTA's as he & his agent are currently in active contract negotiations with GM, John Lynch. One suprise player who isn't there is Christian McCaffrey. McCaffrey who is under contract for 2 more seasons is currently the highest paid running back in the NFL. #cmc won AP offensive player of the year last season has been the focal point of the offense ever since he arrived. There has been no word as to why CMC hasn't shown up as almost all the other vet superstar players have shown up (i.e. George Kittle, Fred Warner, Nick Bosa, Brock Purdy, Deebo Samuel, Juice, Mooney Ward). In a recent presser, HC Kyle Shanahan
was asked about CMC not showing up to OTAs and if he is seeking a new deal with the team. Kyle's answer appeared to be very closemouthed which is uncharacteristic of him to do. Most people know CMC proposed to his long time girlfriend in 2023 and is expected to be getting married. Well, if it had anything to do with his wedding or honeymoon, wouldn't kyle have just said that? No one would have batted an eye as it'd be totally understandable. But he didn't say that. Matter of fact he answer gave me the high indication CMC missing OTAs is about the mula, the money, the bag.
In this epsiode we'll dive into why I believe McCaffrey missing OTAs is a clear sign of him wanting a new or revised contract for more $$ and why he has every right to be asking for it!
