Chapter 5 combines exhortations, warnings, and encouragement. The focus is on patience, endurance, and preparation for the Lord's return. We notice a comparison and contrast. The first six verses have two aims:
To show the ultimate worthlessness of all earthly riches
To show the detestable character of those who possess riches
By making this contrast, James wants his readers to avoid placing all their hopes, aims, and desires on earthly things.
