After Austria declares war on Serbia and Russia's imperial dynasty begins to fall, Eliza escapes back to America, while Sofya and her family flee to their country estate. Sofya unwittingly lets danger into her house after hiring peasant Varinka to look after her son. While Eliza helps the White Russians immigrate to the states, Varinka makes for Paris and Sofya has made it her mission to reunite with her son.
