Emma Donoghue's historical fiction novel is based on the 1918 Influenza pandemic. Nurse Julia Power, volunteer Bridie Sweeney, and Doctor Kathleen Lynn are on their own battlefield in a maternity ward trying to help mothers deliver their babies. Over the course of three days, they endure life-long victories and losses.
