I have written and recorded this first episode three times now. Hashtag, problems of a perfectionist. I am Allie Martin, I live in Louisville, Kentucky. I am a Christian, a wife and momma to a labradoodle named Henna Sue.
When I made the decision to start Selfish it was fueled by many different motivators. One, I was working in the spa industry where self-care is preached and I whole-heartedly support that. Two, I had a radio show in college and that was really fun. And three, and probably the most important, I genuinely love hearing people’s stories. So often we get stuck in the ruts and don’t celebrate the wins, but when you look back on someone’s entire journey you see the purpose of those ruts and you can cheer on the victories.
So really, this show is nowhere near what I thought it would become, and yet, it is exactly what I wanted. I get to share with you some incredible journeys of some incredibly brave people. In the craziness of their ups and downs they have shared how they went after their goals with intensity, while not losing sight of themselves.
One of my guests Craig Williard explained it in his interview:
“I like to use the analogy of a cordless drill. You have a brand-new battery and you put it on the drill. And you hold it, and continue to hold it. Eventually it will die. You have to recharge it so it can continue to provide help. Selfishness is that recharge. It’s taking time to do something that gives you that energy.”
Another, Erica Gragg explained it as:
“To be selfish often times is a privilege. To have the time and resources, but to even have the knowledge that you know it’s good and okay to take care of yourself. But truly, you must tap back into yourself and reconnect and discover what makes your soul sing.”
Although this journey took me much longer than I had ever thought, I am so proud and can’t wait to get started on Season Two. So please continue to listen, share these episodes with someone who will enjoy them, and I hope the stories I have delivered inspire you to focus on what makes your soul sing.
