Derek worked for over 19+ years for the lifestyle clothing brand Volcom, where he worked his way up from receptionist to VP of Global Sustainability. Like many, Derek worked in the restaurant industry, which taught him life lessons he reflects on to this day. He is a University of California at Irvine alumni, where he graduated with his B.A. of Arts and M.B.A. of Business. At some point during his career, the question arose of why we are still doing business the old way and not prioritize the balance between people, planet, and profit. Derek founded his own sustainability consultant firm, The Underswell, and co-founded together with Troy Eckert, former Volcom's marketing mind, the B-Corp. certified men's yoga brand...The Kozm. Derek is an educator, teaching sustainability at Orange Coast College. Not only does he care about sharing his knowledge, but also being part of the solution, believing change starts with people...change is social.
