John 19
The role of the Blessed Virgin is critical in God’s plan for salvation because her fiatprovided for the flesh of the Lord. But she must have also critically contributed to the life of the Church as a unique witness. Is there any other person who witnessed all of the birth, the childhood, the public life, the Passion, the Resurrection, and the Ascensionof Christ Jesus, other than the Blessed Mother? She was the one who kept all those things of Christ’s infancy in her heart. Who else could have handed to us the beautiful praise of the Magnificatother than her? Because of her motherhood and witness, the first Christians didn’t have any doubt about the humanity of Christ as many modern people do. Because she was the one who held the body of her son after his death, none of the apostles and disciples had to doubt about his death. Because she also became a witness of the Resurrection of the Lord with the apostles, the apostles didn’t have to doubt if the risen Christ was truly him. For his mother confirmed his resurrection! Since Christ had given his mother to St John, it is a very reasonable assumption that the beloved disciple learned many things about Christ Jesus directly from his mother. In a word, the Blessed Mother became the most credible witness of Christ Jesus for the apostles and the first Church, and, in this way, contributed to the sold foundation of Christianity. She provided not only for the flesh of Christ but also for the unique witness of Christ. Her witness became the source of the gospels and the Tradition of the Church.
Let us be thankful to our Blessed Mother who took the piercing pain in her heart to witness her Son’s Passion to become a witness of Christ for our faith. Without her suffering under the Cross with her Son, we couldn’t have had the most reliable witness of his Passion. Whenever we truly witness the Lord’s Passion, we are looking at him with the sorrowful eyes of his Blessed Mother.
