Luke 8

The common reaction to the parable of the sower is to determine what kind of ground I am. It can be a good starting point. But the real question should be how I can become good soil. I don’t think that the Lord predetermines what kind of ground I am in this life. If it were so, sinners wouldn’t be so much responsible for their wickedness, and saints would not merit their holy lives.

We all know we should follow the instructions on the envelopes when we buy any seed. Different plants require different ways of planting and raising. When we ignore the instructions, the seed will not germinate or grow properly or flower at its time. In the same way, we should follow the Word of the Lord to grow the seed of eternal life to reach its fullness in the life to come.

This seed of eternal life is sown in our mortal life here on earth. But this life and this world are governed and dominated by the worldly principles under the power of Satan. This is why we have so many difficulties to grow the seed of eternal life on earth. Our flesh so often betrays our good intention to grow the seed of eternal life according to the Word of the Lord. The world scorns the Gospel. But we cannot stop growing the seed just because the weather is bad. That’s why our Christian life on earth is an ongoing battle.

Do we water our plants only for great feast days? Do we attend to our gardens on statutory holidays only? No, we pay attention to our plant and our gardens almost every day. Do you think it would be very different to grow the seed of eternal life? No, the Word of the Lord should be applied to our daily decisions and daily relationships. And we need to be more conscious of the Word of the Lord especially when the weather is inclement.
