John 10
How many different insurances do you pay for every year? There are so many kinds of insurance policies these days. Properties, professional operations, leisure activities are insured. Life insurance and health insurance. Even our pets can be insured. Are there things that cannot be insured in our times? When insurance brokers encourage you to purchase another policy, what do they say to you? “With just ten or twenty dollars a month, you don’t have to worry about it at all.” It removes all anxieties and uncertainties from our hearts and minds.
Although insurance was introduced to help collectively those in serious emergencies, these days insurance proliferates because they can lessen our responsibility. We don’t have to worry about whatever we do or buy. Whatever goes wrong, insurance money will resolve issues. And people are happy when they are covered with money from insurance. In a word, I don’t have to bear my responsibility!
The prevalence of insurance in our societies is only one example of how less and less responsibility we are willing to take in our times. When you have to deal with any institution, most often you don’t see the one in charge of the institution but its lawyers or legal team. This atmosphere of avoiding responsibility fills our societies and even churches. So often we are redirected and redirected toward someone “who might help us better.” It is not easy to encounter one who personally says to you, “Sorry,” or “I will look into it now,” or “I will take care of it.” Often we cannot even hear a simple “Yes” or “No.”
A true leader is not afraid of responsibility. A true leader works on his own. When we see true leaders, we follow them. Success does not even matter when we follow true leaders.
Jesus was a true leader. He was not afraid of telling the truth. He did not hide against the threat of life to proclaim the truth. In fact, he was much more than a leader. He gave his life to us to lead us to the truth. So he became the way to the truth.
If we confess we are followers of Christ, let us be like him. All Christians are called to be shepherds. At home and work let us take our responsibilities. People will recognize our voice as we hear Christ’s voice and follow him.
